This Wednesday, the main card of UFC Fight Night: Cerrone Vs. Miller will showcase two up-and-coming lightweight fighters looking for their first winning streak in the promotion. Joe Proctor and Justin Salas are each coming off impressive wins this year. Proctor earned a dominant unanimous decision vs. fellow TUF:15 competitor and BJJ mastermind Cristiano Marcello, while Salas made quick work of Ben Wall with a KO just over two minutes into the fight.
If this fight stays standing, both Proctor and Salas will remain active as each have landed more than three significant strikes per minute and have also absorbed just under three strikes per minute. While Salas has totaled more TKO/KO victories in his professional MMA career, Proctor has shown constant improvement in his striking game as well as knockout power with great versatility when he caught Jeremy Larsen with a knee right on the chin and finished the fight seconds later.
Proctor is typically known for his dangerous ground game. He has already achieved four wins by submission with his well-developed Jiu-jitsu attack and he works with some of the best in the world when it comes to fighting off your back. He trains in Massachusetts with 6-time UFC “Submission of the Night” winner Joe Lauzon and former BJJ world champion Jimmy Quinlan. To get this fight to the ground might sound difficult for Proctor as he has yet to complete a takedown in his UFC tenure. However, in Salas’s five UFC fights, only one opponent (Thiago Tavares) has even attempted a takedown on him. That one takedown attempt was in fact successful. Salas, himself, has only a 20% takedown success rate, while Proctor carries a well-respected 70% takedown defense.
Due to both fighters willingness to stand and exchange as well as Proctor’s dangerous BJJ skills, this fight will be exciting throughout as a finish will always be within reach. Make sure to catch the action on Wednesday, July 16th! The main card kicks off live from New Jersey on Fox Sports 1 at 9 p.m. EST/ 6 p.m. PST.
