Tonight at UFC 183, Joe Lauzon looks for his third straight win in the Octagon as he faces Al Iaquinta, who’s also gunning for his third straight UFC victory. After defeating The Ultimate Fighter winner Michael Chiesa, “J-Lau” now turns his attention to the runner up of that season. With a record 13 “Performance of the Night” bonuses, Lauzon knows his octagon experience gives him an edge going into this fight as he told Fox Sports, “I have a huge experience advantage over him. I’ve been fighting in the UFC long before he was even thinking of fighting. I’ve had eighteen fights in the UFC and he hasn’t had that many MMA fights, overall.”
In Lauzon’s eyes, being a veteran of the Octagon isn’t his only advantage. “I have much better Jiu Jitsu. Once the fight hits the ground, it’s pretty much going to be over.” Lauzon has every right to be confident in his ground game. After all, he’s racked up more Submission victories (18) than Iaquinta has had pro fights (14).
Although he’s known for his grappling, Lauzon has tallied 5 KO/TKO victories and is always prepared for his opponents’ standup with his own attack, regardless if they respect it or not. “From Al’s perspective, I bet he thinks he has a big advantage on the feet, and an aggression advantage. I think that’s a mistake for him to bank on that.”
Whether this fight is decided on the feet or on the ground, you can count on Lauzon making this fight entertaining, as he tries to notch his 14th “Performance of the Night” bonus.
